Understanding Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder that affects breathing while sleeping. In Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), the throat muscles become relaxed and block the airway. In Central sleep apnea (CSA), the brain does not send correct signals to allow proper breathing.

Sleep apnoea not only affects your restful nights but also keeps you exhausted. If it is left untreated, it can impact the individual physically and mentally, leading to various serious ailments. These include diabetes, heart disease, dementia, high blood pressure, stroke and cancer. Thus, it is vital to get sleep consultation for sleep disorders.

The common symptoms of sleep apnoea are:

  • Loud snoring
  • Sleepiness and lethargy during the day
  • Headaches in the morning
  • Waking up with a dry mouth
  • Waking several times at night
  • Mood swings, poor concentration and irritability
  • Gasping for air while sleeping

Sleep apnoea can be treated by identifying the problem behind the sleep disorder and its severity. At Rise Sleep Health Robina, we provide the correct diagnosis through a test for sleep and understanding the medical history of the patient. The common treatment includes CPAP therapy, EPAP therapy, and MAS therapy based on the needs of the patient.

Understanding Sleep Apnoea Treatments

An EPAP is a valve that attaches to the nostrils before sleep. This valve uses only the sleeper’s breath to create pressure as they exhale. This pressure prompts physical changes that make it more likely the airway will remain open during inhalation, reducing the periods of lapsed breathing that characterise sleep apnoea. Unlike a CPAP device, an EPAP does not add pressure on inhalation.

MAS is a device you wear over your teeth as you sleep. They bring your lower jaw forward to help keep your upper airway open. They are also called intra-oral devices, mandibular advancement devices and mouth guards. They are effective if you have Mild OSA or low Moderate OSA. If MAS is recommended for you, it should be custom-made by a trained healthcare professional working alongside the sleep service. They will want to make impressions of your upper and lower teeth to make your device.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the most effective treatment if you have Moderate to Severe OSA. If you have Mild OSA, your Sleep doctor in Gold Coast may also recommend CPAP. It is a simple machine that pumps air through a mask you wear at night. It’s designed to hold your airway open while you are asleep. It sends air at pressure into your upper airway to stop it from collapsing or narrowing.

Sleep Quality Improvement

A good night’s sleep is when the person sleeps through the night without waking up and falls asleep quickly. It involves waking up fresh and energetic in the morning without any feelings of lethargy or sleepiness in the day. Adults must get a minimum of 7 hours of constant sleep to maintain good health. It is vital to sleep and wake up at the same time every day to stick to a schedule and set the body clock.

Sleep quality is impacted by various reasons, such as:

  • Stress and tension can make it challenging to fall asleep because negative thoughts bother you and make you uneasy.
  • An irregular sleeping schedule and consuming a large meal just before going to bed can cause insomnia.
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption can relax the throat muscles a bit more, which can cause sleep apnoea.
  • Nasal congestion can cause snoring and breathing trouble while sleeping.
  • Enlarged tonsils and adenoids in children can lead to blockage of the airway.
  • Obesity and age can also impact sleep quality.

Sleep quality can be improved by making lifestyle changes mentioned below:

  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.
  • Increase physical activity to fall asleep quickly and reduce weight.
  • Make your sleep environment more comfortable by keeping it cool and dark.
  • If you take time to fall asleep, try taking a warm bath or reading a book before bed to relax your mind and body.
  • Practice breathing exercises and meditation to get rid of stress.
  • Do not consume caffeinated beverages or alcohol before bed.
  • Get a sleep consultation at one of our Rise Sleep Health Clinics.

Poor sleep quality can be identified by lack of sleep at night or difficulty in falling asleep. If the person sleeps poorly at night, they will feel tired and sleepy throughout the day. They may not be able to focus on work and concentrate on anything because of irritability and frustration due to improper rest. It can lead to mood swings and even depression.
